The United Way is a national charitable organization that has over 1,300 organizations working with them to help make positive, lasting changes in many communities and in people’s lives. The United Way causes focus on areas that include children and youth, health care systems, promoting self-sufficiency and strengthening families.
Local communities work with the United way to identify the underlying causes of the most significant local issues, and then develop strategies to pull together financial and human resources to address them. Because of the unique conditions in each community, the support the United Ways offers is determined on a case-to-case basis
To become a member of the United Way, a non-profit organization must have a worthy charitable cause and adhere to certain United Way requirements that include tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) and file a IRS Form 990 annually. They must also have an active, responsible and voluntary governing body that ensures effective governance over the policies and financial resources of the organization. An organization must represent itself as a United Way member in accordance with all United Way of America trademark standards and requirements.
