Planning an elementary school fundraiser can be financially rewarding, as well as a lot of fun. Obviously, the event will have to be driven by parents and teachers during the planning stages with the enthusiastic help of the children who are involved in the project.

The concept for the fundraiser should be simple and easy to manage. Legwork should include careful consideration of ideas that are profit-making to insure a profit margin. There are some relatively standard elementary school fundraisers that are proven to be successful and include walk-a-thons, candy and cookie sales, carnivals and yard sales.

For a walk-a-thon, parents and children can work together to plan the event including securing a location, deciding the distance and creatively thinking of a way to raise money through registration fees, pledging and sponsorships. Candy and cookie sales are also relatively easy, more or less applying the sample principals used to plan a walk-a-thon. Will the sales be held for a day or a number of days at the school? Will the children have a form in order to take orders from family and friends? Will the event be driven by a fundraising company (extra expenditure), or will the “committee” run the event on their own? Yard sales can be successful when there is community involvement and ample advertisement of the event. Usually parents can secure public service announcements placed in local newspapers and local radio stations.

The best way to make the most profit is to start planning early. It’s not unreasonable to plan an event at least six months in advance. Do research and find out how the best campaigns are run and gather online tips about what works and what to avoid. Most of all make sure that you have plenty of volunteers who are excited about work for and supporting fundraising goals.
